In our last post, we talked about some of the obvious winter essentials that every girl MUST have before the season kicks into full gear. One of the most important items on our list was a coat, and while this seems like a no-brainer, choosing the right coat can feel like an impossible task.
In winter, your coat really dictates your look. It is the first item people see, and the style gives them an immediate impression. Are you professional, feminine, athletic or practical? Or perhaps a bit of each? Investing in the perfect coat will keep you warm and ahead of the fashion game this season, so don’t overlook the importance.
Depending on your lifestyle, you may feel you need more than one coat…. Perhaps an everyday coat, a raincoat, one that’s a bit dressier for special occasions… maybe even a casual jacket. While we would all love to expand our wardrobes this way, it can be hard to find three or four great, affordable coats without spending lots of time and effort (and hanging space!). Instead, you may want to consider a coat that fits more than one category.
The first option like this is the trench coat. Timeless and classic, the trench coat looks just as good with jeans and boots as with pearls and heels. Figure flattering and stylish, the trench suits all body types as long as you choose one that fits you well, and comes with a belt. An added benefit is that they are lightweight, and usually at least semi-weather proof, so you can take your time looking for a raincoat.
Next is the pea coat. Another classic, pea coats look best when they are tailored and fit well. Generally warmer than the trench coat, pea coats are great if your climate leans towards snow and/or cold wind and less rain. These bring an outfit up a notch, and look great with cute scarves and accessories. You may need to invest in a rain coat in case of a bad storm, but you can easily find affordable options online!
If you’re on the taller end of the spectrum, you may also want to try a straight coat. Boxy and chic, these look super professional and sophisticated without going overboard. During the day they look rather casual, but you can dress yours up with some jewelry if you’re headed to a night out.
Whichever style you choose, be sure to try it on in person before buying it. Do the shoulders look good on you? Does the style suit your figure, and is it comfortable? Do the sleeves comes all the way down past your wrists? Make sure your new coat fits you well, and suits your body type before you take it home. With the right coat, getting dressed this winter will be so much more pleasant!
What are your favorite coat styles? Do you have more than one in your wardrobe?
Until next time,
