Summer Bugs and How to Shake ‘Em

It’s spring and the sun is out with a vengeance. You’re at the top of your game, looking pretty tan and rockin’ your pearls, so you don’t really notice the fuzzy feeling behind your eyes or the tickle in your throat. You may be a bit more tired than usual, but you assume it’s the sun exposure and your busy schedule…and then you realize that you’ve been feeling this way for a few days now, and starting to feel worse. Then it hits you– you’re coming down with something. In June. Yep, the flu and other bugs are not limited to winter months, and often hit hard and unexpectedly in the summer as well. Don’t worry though: whether you’re coming down with a stomach virus or a cold, there are some things you can do right now to help stop your illness in its tracks and help your body recover ASAP.

  1. Rest. Give your body a serious break and try to get some extras zzs, because your body regenerates and fights off infection much more effectively while you sleep. Try to avoid screens and other distractions that may keep you up- let your body truly rest so it can recover that much faster.
  2. Hydrate. Your body needs fluids to fight infection and keep your system clear. Make sure to up your water intake (especially in this weather!) though juices and teas will also help reduce symptoms like a sore throat or runny nose.
  3. Crank up the vitamin C. Drink fresh orange juice, a healthy shake or pop by a drugstore and stock up on some vitamins to give your immune system a boost. Echinacea drops or tea are also know to support the immune system and minimize the effects of viruses and other infections.
  4. Gargle salt water. Combine warm water and a teaspoon of salt to rinse out your throat, clear away bacteria and reduce inflammation right at the source.
  5. Wash your hands. Though so often overlooked, hygiene plays a significant part when it comes to contracting diseases and passing them along. Although it may be too late if you are exhibiting symptoms, washing your hands well and avoiding contact with coworkers and family members can stop your bug from spreading.
  6. Eat healthy. You may not have an appetite, or you may be ravenous. Either way, give your body the fuel it needs to battle illness by eating healthy, lean foods like fish or chicken and plenty of antioxidants. Don’t overdo it, and don’t forget your fluids!

If nothing helps, visit your doctor and just take it easy. Most colds and other viruses pass within a week, so take care of yourself and you’ll be back to your old self in no time!

Feel good!
