Many, many, maaaaany women consider black their go-to color. It’s classic, subtle and slimming, not to mention very easy to find as well as to pair with favorite accessories. If you love to wear all black, though, you may find yourself getting a bit bored with your wardrobe and need some ideas to spice up your outfits. If you’re getting dressed up, we always recommend pearls (of course!), but here are some aspects to consider regardless of where you’re headed.
Structure. The shape of a top or dress is extremely significant, and becomes even more some when you’re going monochrome. Peplum styles are an excellent choice, as are crop tops or pieces with dynamic cut-outs.
Layers. Fitted blazers, trench coats, shirts with popped collars and unique knit tops all add dimension and life to an outfit, all the more so when it’s all black. Keep your look fresh and don’t overdo it to avoid looking too intense or harsh.
Heels. Nothing says polish and class better than the right pair of heels. If you’re not sure what to wear and are seriously leaning toward slim black pants and a black sweater, throw on a pair of point-toe black pumps to create a complete, totally intentional-looking ensemble.
Length and proportion. Don’t be afraid to mess around with different shapes and styles. In fact, when it comes to wearing black, dimension and contrast are crucial to creating a flattering, unique and non-depressing look. Try a cropped sweater with a long cardigan to add some serious length, or a boxy top paired with tight black jeans to keep things balanced.
Interesting pieces. All black doesn’t mean invisible, and it certainly doesn’t have to mean that you fade into the background, either. Invest in some great statement pieces like a sheer black blouse, black dresses of different cuts and fabrics, and black jeans with just a bit of distressing. Black is useful when you want to blend in, but it can definitely help you stand out as well!
Accessories. We saved the best for last- accessories. If you’re really sticking with a completely black outfit, you should still be thinking about your shoes, handbag, jewelry and sunglasses; any and all of which can make or break your outfit. If you want to break out of the monochrome mode just a drop, you can do so easily by adding a pop of color or pattern in the form of a purse or clutch, a bright-colored lipstick, or statement jewelry.
What’s your favorite way to wear black?
Until next time,
