This season is all about layering, since it provides a practical solution to the ever-changing temperatures as we venture in and out of doors. But, layering can also be super fashionable and flattering if done right. One of the most popular layering pieces is the cardigan, so we’ve come up with some styling tips just for you!
How to Wear a:
Cropped or Waist-Length Cardigan
Pair your shorter cardigan with high-waisted styles, or fit-and-flare dresses. For the most proportionate look, the hem of the cardigan should pass the narrowest part of your dress or skirt by only an inch or two. Avoid long tops, as the difference in lengths will break up your natural lines in an unflattering way. Add a pearl necklace to really complete the look!
Oversized Cardigan
This category is broad and includes a wide range of styles, including chunkier cable-knits, sweaters with asymetrical hems and aztec styles with bold, geometric patterns or stripes. Though these differ in details, the rules remain the same: stick with tight shirts as a base, and pair them with skinnier jeans or even leggings and boots for balance. Don’t try these with flowy maxi skirts, boyfriend jeans or other loose-fitting bottoms, as these will make you look wide and shapeless.
Wrap Cardigan
Like the oversized sweater, the wrap cardigan is long with lots of excess fabric. However- and this is a big however- it cinches at the waist to give you a slimmer, more proportional shape. For a more casual look, you may tie the sash loosely at the back, but the effect is similar and a bit more forgiving due to the long, drapey lines. Pair your wrap cardigan with dark, slimming bottoms or a solid-colored dress for a super simple but extra stylish look that goes great with pearls. Don’t wear too short a skirt though, or the lengths will clash. Stick with dark jeans, black trousers or even skirts that reach or pass the knee.
Boyfriend Cardigan
Casual, easy and comfortable, the boyfriend cardigan is a fall and winter wardrobe staple. Make the most of it by pairing it with items that are a bit more form-fitting, and add a pop of color with a scarf or handbag. Don’t wear anything too flowy or full underneath, whether it’s a dress or a top, as this will make you look frumpy. For A-line dresses and skirts, stick with the cropped or waist-length cardi!
