Leggings are a staple of fall and winter wardrobes, and they have so many wonderful uses. They’re warm, comfy and convenient… But worn incorrectly, they can be a total disaster. Let’s discuss some of the Do’s and Don’ts of leggings as we kick off the season.
DO
When it comes to leggings, quality comes first. Invest in a pair that fit you perfectly and compliment or support your shape. Make sure they are completely opaque so there are no faux pas, and that they come all the way up to your natural waist.
If you’re wearing your legging as pants, make sure to wear long shirts, jackets or tank tops to avoid awkward bunching and wardrobe malfunctions. Leggings also look great with dresses and tunics, and make a great option for pregnant women who don’t want to invest in too many pairs of maternity jeans. Pair your leggings with boots, booties or flats; anything goes! You can dress them up or down with a pair of earrings or a beautiful pearl bracelet, and a patterned scarf for some added interest.
DO NOT
Do not stock up on cheap pairs of leggings. It may seem worth it at the time, but these will probably lose shape and elasticity with their first wash. They are also likely to be at least semi-sheer, which is another big no-no. Keep it classy! Tights, unlike leggings, can range from opaque to sheer, but leggings should always provide true coverage.
Do not wear leggings that end at your hips, as these will make you look unnatural and give you unnecessary love handles. Don’t wear leggings that are too tight, and don’t go for a pair that is way too loose either. Leggings are meant to be snug, but comfort is key to looking good in your leggings.
Don’t wear shirts that are very form-fitting or short while wearing leggings. The contrast of a long, loose shirt is ultra-flattering. If you want to add a bit of definition to your top, add a belt or cardigan to finish off your look.
Do you like wearing leggings as pants, or do you stick to jeans and dresses?
Until next time,
